Breathing New Life into a Redding Classic: The Hidden Valley Ranch Remodel
At Rowe Construction, we are passionate about preserving and transforming unique homes that define the character of Southern New England. This year, we’re excited to embark on a truly special project: the Hidden Valley Ranch Remodel at 285 Redding Rd. in Redding, Connecticut. Longtime locals may remember this property by its former name, Hawk’s Nest. Today, as Hidden Valley Ranch, this extraordinary country retreat—set on over 7 acres—continues to blend Redding’s rich history with contemporary comfort, right in the heart of Fairfield County.
A Storied Local Retreat
The reimagined Hidden Valley Ranch is more than a home—it’s an iconic Redding retreat with deep roots in the community. Spanning 7.31 gated acres, the property features gently sloping meadows, mature woodlands, a scenic pond, classic split-rail fencing, and original stone walls. At its heart is a historic converted barn from circa 1800, complemented by a stunning modern glass and stone addition. Amenities include a heated gunite pool, a gambrel-roofed barn with four stalls, hayloft, workshop, greenhouse, root cellar, and a detached three-bay garage—offering the essence of rural Connecticut living.
A Home of Historic Significance
Originally serving as a barn, the home was moved back from the main road in the 20th century. In the 1930s, aviation pioneer Frank M. Hawks owned the property, lending it its unique legacy. Some of the interior’s beams and bricks were salvaged from Mark Twain’s nearby “Stormfield” estate after a fire, directly connecting this home to one of Connecticut’s most celebrated historical figures.
Inspired Design Meets Local Craft
The transformation of Hidden Valley Ranch was guided by architect Roger Pitt Witcomb, who designed the breathtaking “garden room” addition—featuring a two-story wall of windows and a native stone waterfall. The interiors showcase wide-board and brick floors, timbered ceilings, exposed beams, three stone fireplaces, a gracious dining room with adjoining wine bar and cellar, and a curved staircase ascending to a family room with a large stone fireplace and balcony.
Thoughtful Modernization, Rooted in Tradition
At Rowe Construction, our approach is meticulous. The original post-and-beam structure—a hallmark of Redding’s architectural heritage—remains the heart of the home. Demolition and renovation are carried out with care, and we’re capturing each phase with photography and drone footage to honor the craftsmanship and history within these walls.
Our updates include rebuilding the exterior shell, creating a new sunroom and terrace, and enhancing energy efficiency with high-performance insulation and advanced HVAC systems. Every choice is designed to preserve the original charm while meeting the demands of modern living.
We’re replacing the old slab and pouring new foundations throughout, integrating state-of-the-art mechanicals for maximum efficiency and longevity. This level of planning and execution sets a new standard for renovations in Redding and across Fairfield County.
Collaboration and Community
This project brings together top-tier local and regional talent. The original design vision was set by James Huniford, a renowned designer in both New York City and Fairfield County. Architect Victoria Baird, celebrated for her work in Redding and nearby towns, is guiding the plans and permitting process. We’re also proud to partner with Jim Blansfield of Blansfield Builders in Danbury, CT, who brings decades of expertise to the team.
A Landmark for Redding’s Future
The Hidden Valley Ranch Remodel is more than a restoration—it’s a celebration of Redding’s heritage and its vibrant future. We look forward to sharing progress and highlights with the local community, showcasing what’s possible when traditional craftsmanship meets modern vision.
As Hidden Valley Ranch is reimagined, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Redding—where a respect for history and a passion for quality create homes that inspire for generations to come.
