Complete First Floor Remodel in Danbury, CT: Creating a Modern Home for Today

Located in the heart of Fairfield County, Danbury, CT, offers a unique blend of historic homes and modern living. For this family’s 1980s-era house, it was time for a major update that honored the space’s original warmth while introducing a more open, contemporary feel. Rowe Construction was honored to take on the challenge.

Reimagining the Heart of the Home: Kitchen Transformation

The kitchen was the centerpiece of this remodel and the most significant structural undertaking. We donated the existing cabinets and appliances to minimize waste and support reuse. Then came the serious engineering work: removing and replacing a load-bearing column with two massive 1,000 lb steel flitch plates. These plates were installed into a flush header system that spans a dramatic 23 feet, giving the new kitchen and living area an open, unobstructed flow.

The new kitchen features custom Kingswood cabinetry, including a cleverly concealed pantry door that blends seamlessly into the wall of cabinetry for a sleek, minimalist design.

Custom Stone Fireplace and Modern Surroundings

We constructed a new stone fireplace complete with a handcrafted mantel and cabinet surround to anchor the living space. This new focal point combines the living and kitchen areas with natural texture and warmth, offering visual impact and functional built-in storage.

Flooring and Finishes: Light, Modern, and Unified

We installed new 4" red oak flooring throughout the first floor, treated with RedOut to neutralize yellowing and finished with a Bona water-based stain and sealer.

The result? A modern, light-toned finish that brightens the space and complements the airy new layout. All staircases and hardwood floors throughout the first floor were refinished to match, creating a consistent, polished look across the entire home.

To maintain a clean, minimalist atmosphere, we also integrated Sonance invisible speakers into the ceilings, offering seamless sound without disrupting the rooms' visual flow.

Fresh, updated paint throughout the main floor tied everything together.

Protecting the Home's Future: Exterior Repairs

During the project, we also identified and addressed hidden rot damage along the home’s siding, caused by improperly installed exterior materials. We replaced compromised siding sections, safeguarding the home’s structure and improving its long-term resilience.
